Balance studio was created in late 2004 by partners, Kevin Psaila, Naoya Kusano and myself. I was frustrated with several of the larger gyms within the city I had worked out at and continually was disappointed. Being just one more client in their database of hundreds, the large facilities always felt impersonal. I also didn't enjoy the atmosphere of what I liked to call "high school". I wanted a facility that I could train in, be motivated by and feel comfortable being in.
The next place I looked were the smaller Pilates studios in town. I liked the individuality that these facilities brought and the atmosphere was more sophisticated and less superficial. What I didn't like was the lack of diverse programming and the expense.
Feeling once again frustrated, I decided to create my own studio that would focus on the aspects of fitness and health that I felt were important.
The first component had to be the atmosphere. Balance needed to be a facility that was not intimidating. Clients should feel supported, comfortable and feel that at an individual level, they mattered to the facility.
The second criteria at balance needed to be the quality of programming. My goal was to find instructors who not only were the best in the city but also loved teaching. I had been to too many classes where I knew the instructor was just going through the motions of their job and really did not care about me. So I needed great instructors and I also needed diverse programming. I personally wanted the ability to take a number of diverse classes that would lead to a well rounded fitness program so that is what I offered. Classes in pilates, yoga, bootcamp, dance and fusion.
The last major component was flexibility. I wanted Balance to be a facility that recognized that life happens and there should always be options for clients who need flexible options in their fitness schedule. We designed classes and payment options to make sure that this was accomplished.
I love being a part of balance. It is a great place to workout and it is filled with truly amazing people. I am always looking for ways to improve the studio and I hope that we continue to evolve and improve.
