Is Your Kitchen Clutter Making You Fat?

Does your kitchen support your healthy lifestyle choices, or does it sabotage you? Studies show that kitchen clutter can in fact make you fat, and there just might be a correlation between your stuff and your appetite.

So how do you combat kitchen clutter?

Tip One: Keep your countertops bare and the sink clean - unused appliances get in the way of nutritious food preparation, and a spacious and clean work area makes it faster and easier to put together a healthy meal.

Tip Two: Get rid of the all cookies, chips, dusty canned items, freezer treats and salt-laden processed foods that cause temptation and crowd out your cupboards. If you must keep certain food items around to appease family members, keep them in a separate cupboard or part of the fridge that is off-limits to you.

Tip Three: Organize your food storage - make sure what's most visible is what's most nutritious. Clear, airtight and stackable containers are ideal to store lentils, chickpeas, quinoa, beans, and similar in the cupboards, and nutritious left-overs in the fridge.

Tip Four: Take a good look at the lighting in your kitchen and dining room - bright harsh lighting can increase your appetite and make you rush through meals, while low soft lighting helps you relax and slow down. Use a dimmer switch and you'll eat less.

Tip Five: Throw out all your duplicates, and any items that are cracked, stained, or damaged. And don’t be afraid to do it! It takes the same self confidence and self trust to lose weight that it does to de-clutter your kitchen - if you're scared to throw out that rusty whisk for fear of needing it some day, are you really ready to lose the excess weight and bad habits you've been hanging on to? Just let go!

Clutter is often a symbol of a feeling of loss of power and control. People who are organized and methodical generally tend to do better with diet and exercise programs. We all know it takes planning and determination to achieve success - use the same approach with your kitchen and you will have a clutter-free, healthy, and beautiful oasis that supports you in achieving your goals and dreams.
